The third temple was built by the Gurjar Pratihar kings of Kanoja (800 to 950 AD). King Bhoj of Malwa and King Bhimdev of Gujarat built the fourth temple on the remains of the third temple. It was then built by King Kumarapala of Gujarat in 1169, whose remains remained till 1950. The fifth temple of Somnath, later built by King Kumarapala of Gujarat in 1169, was built on 13 November. It was demolished in 1947 and a new temple was planned. The foundation stone of Somnath temple was laid on May 8, 1950.The Pranapratishtha Mahotsav was later held on May 11, 1951.
