Mahashay Dharmapal Gulati, owner of MDH Group, known as Masalaking, has passed away. Dharmapal, 98, was admitted to Chennai Hospital in Delhi for the past few days due to illness. Dharmapala came to India during the Partition, Dharmapala who started making a living by riding a horse-drawn carriage became the king of spices. He was also honored with Pahmbhushan.
Born in Sialkot
Mahashay Dharmapal was born on March 27, 1923 in Sialkot (now in Pakistan). He left school in 1933 after completing Std. In 1937, he started a business with the help of his father, followed by soap, clothing, hardware and rice.
He started working in Maheshia Di Hatti. He was known as Degi Mirch Wala. He came to Delhi at the time of India-Pakistan partition and on September 27, 1947, he had only Rs. 1500. At that time with this money he bought a horse-drawn carriage for Rs. 650 and drove it between New Delhi railway station and Qutub Road.
When India-Pakistan split, he came to Delhi with 1500 rupees.
MDH's 18 factories today, 62 products
quickly accumulated enough wealth for his family to open a spice shop on Ajmal Khan Road in Karola Bagh, Delhi. It was from this shop that they kept moving forward. MDH spices reach the world by being manufactured from these factories. MDH has 62 products. The company claims to occupy 80 per cent of the North Indian market.
Along with business in social work, he has also done work which has proved to be very helpful for the society. This includes building hospitals, schools, etc. He has opened many schools and colleges so far.
Dharmapal is considered to be the oldest brand-ambassador in the FMCG sector.
